One of the most representative instruments of the African continent
is kalimba, also called mbira, kisanze, likembe, sanza, etc, according
to the region, number of tongue-pieces and size. It consists in
a a series of metal pieces mounted on a box of resonance of gourd
or wood, which are pressed with the thumbs. It is generally tuned
up in a pentaphonic scale (this is, 5 sounds by octave: A, C, D,
E, G), although also others scales can be used. Built in wood like
mara, cedro, incienso, cancharana and guayacán, they can
be used as a professional musical instrument, or as complement in
musical didactics.
